The company established its presence in India through a joint venture agreement signed in 1982 between Suzuki Motor Corporation, the Government of India, and Maruti Udyog, which later became Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The first vehicle rolled out from the manufacturing facility in December 1983, when the Maruti 800 entered the market. Over the following 42 years, the company expanded its range to include 19 models covering multiple vehicle categories and powertrain options.

The sales progression reveals the growth trajectory of the Indian automobile sector. The company took 22 years and three months to reach the 5 million units mark in February 2006. By February 2012, it had doubled this figure to 10 million units. The second decade saw faster growth, with 20 million units achieved by July 2019. The latest milestone of 30 million units took a cumulative period of 42 years from the initial rollout.
