Since FY 2014-15, cumulative dispatches via rail have reached around 24 lakh vehicles, marking an eight-fold increase over the past decade.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable logistics, dispatching over 5.18 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in FY 2024-25. This marks the company’s highest-ever rail dispatch figure in a single financial year. Of the company’s total vehicle dispatches during the fiscal year, around 25% were carried out via rail.

The use of railways for transporting vehicles enabled Maruti Suzuki to avoid over 1.8 lakh tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions and save more than 63 million litres of fuel in FY 2024-25 alone. The company emphasised that railways provide a low-emission, energy-efficient alternative to road transport, which helps alleviate highway congestion while supporting national sustainability goals.

Maruti Suzuki now dispatches vehicles to over 20 logistics hubs via rail, from where more than 600 Indian cities are serviced. The company also utilises railway links to reach port terminals, such as Mundra and Pipavav. Since FY 2014-15, cumulative dispatches via rail have reached around 24 lakh vehicles, marking an eight-fold increase over the past decade.

In a major infrastructure milestone, India’s first in-plant railway siding dedicated to automobile transport was inaugurated at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing facility in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The company currently operates over 40 flexi deck rakes, each capable of carrying approximately 300 vehicles per trip.

Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki aims to increase the share of its rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35% by FY2030-31. According to Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, “Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority for us, both in our products and in our operations.” He also recalled the company’s pioneering step in 2013, when it became the first Indian automaker to obtain an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license, paving the way for large-scale use of railways in automotive logistics.
