India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, has officially entered the electric vehicle (EV) race with the announcement of its first electric SUV, the e Vitara. The automaker has teased its first EV ahead of its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025. The e Vitara is set to be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility.

Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. To tackle this issue, we are committed to introducing a reliable and comprehensive EV ecosystem alongside the e Vitara. This will include home charging solutions as well as a nationwide network of fast chargers available at Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service touchpoints. Our goal is to make EVs accessible, convenient, and appealing to a broader set of customers, and this is exactly what we have set out to achieve with the e Vitara.”
The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will feature two battery options, both based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. These battery packs are sourced from FinDreams, a subsidiary of the Chinese EV giant BYD, and utilise advanced blade cell technology, renowned for its safety and reliability. The 49 kWh battery pack will power a 2WD variant that delivers 140 bhp and 189 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the larger 61 kWh battery pack offers two configurations: a 2WD variant with 170 bhp and a 4WD version branded as AllGRIP-e, which uses a dual-motor setup to generate 178 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. The AllGRIP-e variant includes features like Trail mode and a Limited Slip Differential (LSD), making it capable of handling both on-road and off-road conditions.
Although official range figures have not yet been disclosed, the e-Vitara is expected to deliver an impressive range of around 550 km on a full charge, which would make it highly competitive in the growing EV segment. Additionally, fast-charging capabilities will enable drivers to recharge their vehicles quickly, addressing concerns about long charging times. These features make the e-Vitara a strong contender in the Indian EV market, where range and charging convenience are critical factors for buyers.
Maruti Suzuki is also leveraging its extensive dealership network to enhance the adoption of its EVs. By integrating fast-charging infrastructure at its service centres and dealerships, the company hopes to create a seamless experience for customers transitioning to electric mobility. Combined with home charging solutions, this ecosystem could position Maruti Suzuki as a leader in customer-friendly EV solutions.
