The W1 has large shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of two of McLaren’s most iconic cars—the F1 and P1.

McLaren is preparing to unveil its latest hypercar, the highly anticipated W1 on October 6, marking a significant milestone for the British automotive brand. The W1 will be the latest in McLaren’s prestigious "1" series, which includes the legendary McLaren F1 and its hybrid successor, the McLaren P1.

Details about the W1 remain largely under wraps, but McLaren has shared tantalizing hints that the car will live up to the "1" series’ legacy. In a brief teaser, McLaren referred to the W1 as "the next icon, the next benchmark," emphasizing its status as a game-changing vehicle. The company has promised that the W1 will be “the best looking, sounding, and performing” car in its class, setting new standards in the hypercar segment.

Michael Leiters, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive said, “The McLaren W1 is defined by real supercar principles and is the ultimate expression of a McLaren supercar. Born of our rich racing history and World Championship mindset, W1 pushes the boundaries of performance and is worthy of the ‘1’ name. Like its predecessors, the F1 and McLaren P1, W1 defines the rulebook of a real supercar.”

The W1 has large shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of two of McLaren’s most iconic cars—the F1 and P1. Both vehicles set benchmarks in their respective eras and are still revered in the automotive world.

Launched in 1992, the McLaren F1 was a game-changer, becoming the first road-legal car to surpass 322 bhp. Powered by a naturally aspirated 6.1-litre V12 engine, the F1 reached a top speed of 386 kmph, a record for production cars that stood for years. McLaren built just 106 units of the F1, making it one of the most coveted sports cars of all time. Despite its age, it remains the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever produced. McLaren F1.jpg

After a long hiatus, McLaren returned to the "1" series with the McLaren P1 in 2013. The P1 represented a massive leap in design and technology, introducing a hybrid powertrain combining a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 891 bhp. With its lightweight carbon fibre body and advanced aerodynamics, the P1 could reach an electronically limited top speed of 349 kmph. Only 375 units were built, all of which were quickly snapped up by collectors and enthusiasts.

While McLaren has been tight-lipped about the specifics of the W1’s performance, its predecessor's achievements set the bar incredibly high. Given the success of the P1's hybrid powertrain, it's likely that the W1 will incorporate hybrid or even fully electric elements, further pushing the envelope of high-performance technology. However, it may take time before McLaren fully transitions to an all-electric hypercar, as the brand is still in the early stages of developing its electric powertrain.

Visually, the W1 is expected to embody McLaren’s characteristic focus on aerodynamics and design purity. The teaser hints at an evolved design language, with sleek, sculpted lines and a focus on maximizing downforce and handling. Given McLaren’s history of carbon fibre innovation, the W1 will likely incorporate advanced materials to ensure both strength and lightness.

The W1’s reveal will take place on October 6, a date that holds special significance for McLaren. This year marks the 50th anniversary of McLaren’s first Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship and Emerson Fittipaldi’s 1974 World Drivers’ Championship victory. The launch of the W1 on this historic date serves as a reminder of McLaren’s racing heritage and its continued pursuit of automotive excellence. McLaren P1.jpg

Once launched, the McLaren W1 will likely command a price tag significantly higher than previous models in the series. Given that the McLaren P1 retailed for over $1 million and the McLaren F1 now sells for tens of millions at auctions, the W1 is expected to be one of the most exclusive and expensive hypercars in the world.
