Mercedes’ C 43 4Matic rivals the Audi S5 Sportback and BMW M340i.
Mercedes-AMG has launched the C 43 4Matic at ₹98 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The performance sedan is ₹ 36 lakh more expensive than the C 300d and ₹41 lakh more expensive than the C 200.
Cosmetically, the C 43 4Matic looks similar to the C 300d as both get the AMG body kit. Up front, the C 43 gets a different grille than the C 300d as it has multiple, vertical slats instead of the star pattern on the diesel version. Furthermore, both ride on 18-inch wheels but the C 43 4Matic gets a different design. At the back, both get the same bumper design but where the C 300d gets two rectangular exhaust pipes, the C 43 gets a quad-pipe set-up.
On the inside, the C 43 4Matic gets an all-black theme whereas on the dashboard of the C 300d is finished in black. The AMG model continues with carbon-fibre inserts on the dashboard and piano black inserts on the centre console. It also gets the same 11.9-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and both get AMG-specific graphics.
AMG-specific bits inside include a flat-bottom steering wheel with two knobs, sports seats, pedals and red seat belts. Other features include ambient lighting, AMG Dynamic Select and AMG Track Pace. It also gets a Burmester sound system with 15 speakers with an output of 710W.
Under the hood, the C 43 4Matic is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that gets an electrified turbocharger. It produces 402 bhp at 6,750 rpm and 500 Nm at 5,000 rpm. With the help of a belt-driven starter generator, the electrified turbocharger system can provide an additional boost of 13 bhp. Mercedes claims the starter generator can act as a 48V mild-hybrid system as well.
Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mercedes-AMG claims the C 43 can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 4.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph. However, with the addition of the AMG Driver’s Package, the top speed can be raised to 265 kmph.
The C 43 4Matic goes up against the Audi S5 Sportback (₹75.74 lakh) and BMW M340i (₹71.50 lakh). This makes AMG's offering the most expensive of the lot and also the most powerful since the S5 Sportback and M340i develop 349 bhp and 369 bhp, respectively.
