The electric G-Class is slated to be launched in India before the end of 2024.
In nearly a month since Mercedes-Benz opened bookings for the G-Class electric SUV, the Indian division of the German marque has received more than 80 bookings for the rugged electric offroader. The electric G-Class is slated to launch before the end of 2024 but Mercedes-Benz is yet to announce the launch timeline.
Officially called the G 580 with EQ Technology, the electric version of G-Class made its global debut in April earlier this year. Cosmetically, the electric G-Class doesn’t look very different compared to the internal combustion engine (ICE) version, that debuted in March 2024, apart from the the lack of an open grille. Additionally, it also gets new alloy wheels and at the back, it can either be specified with a tailgate-mounted spare wheel or a square box to store charging cables, snow chains or tools.
Inside, the electric G-Class is nearly the same as the ICE version, save for some EQ-branded touches. It gets the same 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and instrument cluster, a grab handle on the dashboard and the steering wheel. In terms of features, it gets Mercedes-Benz’s transparent bonnet feature, a 360-degree camera, MBUX operating system, ADAS and more.
The G-Class with EQ Technology is powered by three electric motors that produce 580 bhp and 1164 Nm (combined). Mercedes-Benz claims the electric version can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 4.7 seconds and the top speed is limited to 180 kmph. It packs a 116 kWh battery pack with a claimed range of up to 473 km on a full charge. With a 200 kW DC fast charger, the electric G-Class can be charged from 10-80 per cent in 32 minutes.
One of the coolest tricks of the G-Class EV is the ‘G-Turn’. It can make quick directional changes, similar to a military tank. With the ‘G-Turn’, the electric off-roader can turn 360 degrees on the spot by turning the left and right side wheels in opposite directions.
The electric G-Class made its India debut as the EQG concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. While the launch timeline hasn’t been revealed, expect it to be the last launch from Mercedes-Benz this year with prices to likely be announced in December. Expect the prices to begin around ₹2.5 crore (ex-showroom, India).
