Mercedes-Benz India’s first launch for 2025 will be the G580 with EQ tech, erstwhile called as the EQG or the electric G-Class on January 9, 2025. With this model, the German automaker combines the rugged off-road capability of the G-Class with the sustainability and innovation of an electric vehicle (EV).
The G 580 retains much of the G-Class’s iconic styling but incorporates distinctive EV-specific elements. Upfront, the traditional grille has been replaced by a closed-off panel with a bold octagonal, illuminated surround. A large Mercedes-Benz emblem dominates the centre, complemented by horizontal slats. Black finishes on the grille and headlamp housing are offered as optional extras.
From the side, the SUV features redesigned alloy wheels, while at the rear, buyers can opt for either the signature tailgate-mounted spare wheel or a square storage box for charging cables and other tools. Aerodynamic improvements include a slightly raised bonnet, air curtains in the rear wheel arches, modified A-pillar cladding, and a redesigned rear spoiler.
Inside, the electric G-Class mirrors the luxurious interior of its internal combustion counterpart. The SUV boasts dual 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, the signature dashboard grab handle, and a host of advanced features. These include the MBUX infotainment system, a 360-degree camera, and the transparent bonnet feature, which provides enhanced visibility for off-road driving.
The G 580 is powered by three electric motors producing a combined 580 bhp and 1,164 Nm of torque. The SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.7 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 180 kmph. The vehicle’s 116 kWh battery offers a WLTP-certified range of 473 km on a full charge. Charging is efficient, with a 200 kW DC fast charger enabling a 10-80 per cent charge in just 32 minutes. The battery is integrated into a 4 mm thick steel ladder-frame chassis, ensuring durability.
Despite being an EV, the G 580 maintains its off-road prowess, boasting approach, departure, and breakover angles of 32, 30.7, and 20.3 degrees, respectively. It offers a ground clearance of 250 mm and can wade through water up to 850 mm deep. The SUV is capable of tackling slopes up to 35 degrees, staying true to its rugged G-Class roots.
