The Vitoria facility, which celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024, has undergone comprehensive upgrades including a new body shop, flexible paint shop and extensively modernised assembly hall.
Mercedes-Benz has commenced pre-series production of its all-electric VLE at its Vitoria plant in Spain, marking the dawn of a new era for the luxury van segment. More than 90 per cent of modernisation work at the site has been completed to accommodate the new modular Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA), with full series production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026.
The Vitoria facility, which celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024, has undergone comprehensive upgrades including a new body shop, flexible paint shop and extensively modernised assembly hall. These investments ensure the plant can build multiple models—including the electric VLE, the combustion-engine VLE, the V-Class, Vito and eVito—on a single, flexible line. Production is already net carbon-neutral, powered by renewable electricity and augmented by on-site photovoltaic and geothermal systems.
“Throughout the entire development process, we have consistently used innovative digital methods while creating significant efficiencies,” said Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. “We will be presenting the result in the first half of 2026”. Bernd Krottmayer, Head of the Vitoria plant, added that the rapid transformation “shows the high flexibility of the plant. We are ready to build the future of Mercedes-Benz Vans”.
The VLE promises limousine-like handling paired with the versatility of an MPV. With seating for up to eight passengers, the portfolio will span family vehicles, lifestyle transporters and high-end shuttles. Early testing has highlighted the VLE’s efficiency, aerodynamics and suitability for extreme conditions—from polar expeditions to Alpine endurance runs.

What does this development mean for India, where Mercedes-Benz has previously imported the V-Class? The luxury MPV segment is growing in India, driven by demand for chauffeur-driven vehicles and high-end family transport. The introduction of the electric VLE could align with India’s accelerating EV adoption and stringent emission norms. Mercedes-Benz India has steadily expanded its EV portfolio, launching models such as the EQS and EQB in recent years.
While Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed plans to bring the VLE to India, the success of the V-Class suggests strong potential. The VLE’s zero-emission credentials and premium positioning may appeal to corporate fleets, luxury hotels and affluent families seeking sustainable mobility solutions. If launched, pricing and localisation strategies will be key, given import duties and charging infrastructure considerations.
As Mercedes-Benz ramps up global electric-van production, India could join key markets for the VLE, extending the brand’s electric mobility leadership into the luxury MPV segment. With the Vitoria plant setting new standards in flexible, sustainable production, the VLE is poised to redefine luxury van travel worldwide—and perhaps, soon, on Indian roads.
