Previously, users could only deactivate Threads temporarily.

Meta, the parent company of the microblogging platform Threads, a subsidiary of Instagram, has rolled out a significant update allowing users to delete their Threads profile without affecting their Instagram account. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, announced two key updates. Previously, users could only deactivate Threads temporarily, and permanent deletion required removing the linked Instagram account entirely.

Mosseri detailed the changes in a Threads post: "First, we're introducing a method for you to independently delete your Threads profile. To do this, go to Settings → Account → Delete or Deactivate Profile, then choose delete. Second, we've implemented a feature enabling Threads posts to be viewed on Facebook and Instagram, enhancing audience reach. However, based on user feedback for more control, we're now providing an opt-out option for this feature in Settings → Privacy."

Threads, which launched in July, initially experienced rapid growth, becoming the quickest app to reach 100 million users. Despite this, its user base has declined, attributed to limited functionality. Notable features include a web-based interface launched at Threads.net and enhancements like an edit button and a voice threads feature for editing posts within five minutes and sharing voice messages.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's founder and CEO, remains optimistic, believing that retaining even 50 million of the initial 100 million users would be a significant achievement for Threads.
