Microsoft says this new capability could help Edge reach wider international audiences.
Microsoft announced at its Build event this week that the Microsoft Edge browser will soon support real-time video translation. By leveraging generative AI capabilities, Edge will be able to translate both video captions and audio in real-time for users. Microsoft says this new capability could help Edge reach wider international audiences while making online videos more inclusive.
The new video translation feature will work on popular sites like YouTube, LinkedIn and Coursera. According to Microsoft, this will make videos more accessible to audiences worldwide by allowing them to watch in their preferred language. The AI-powered translation happens entirely on the device to safeguard users' privacy.
Initially, Edge can translate between English and five languages - Hindi, German, Spanish, Russian and Italian. It can also translate Spanish to English, and Microsoft aims to add support for more languages over time.
Users will be able to select a video's original language and choose subtitles or dubbed audio in the desired output language. After a short processing time, Edge will generate translated captions or dub the audio stream.
This adds to Edge's existing AI skills, such as summarizing YouTube videos and features integrated from Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant. The video translation rollout timeline has yet to be confirmed, but Microsoft indicated it will soon expand to more websites and languages.
