MobilEye has developed Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) for accurately determining speed limits on roads.

Israel-based MobilEye, the autonomous vehicle technology company acquired by Intel in 2017, has developed a new vision-based system aimed at accurately determining speed limits on roads. Dubbed the Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), the technology can also comprehend illustrated signs such as those denoting children at play, and communicate appropriate speed adjustments to vehicles.

The ISA system has attained certification in 27 EU countries, along with Israel, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. This comes as the EU implements new general automotive safety regulations mandating speed limit detection capabilities in all new vehicles.

Whilst many manufacturers already incorporate basic speed limit info using GPS and onboard data, more advanced systems from companies like MobilEye and Tesla utilise cameras to read signs and automatically adapt cruise control. However, the new ISA tech focuses purely on speed limit detection rather than full automation.

Utilising MobilEye's proprietary EyeQ processing platform, the software can identify speed-relevant signs and road markings among current and emerging variations. MobilEye claims its advantage lies in supra-human perception powered by over 400 petabytes of accumulated driving data worldwide. The company states map-based systems cannot match the accuracy and affordability of its computer vision-centric approach.

MobilEye hints that a major automaker will launch ISA across two brands later this year for the European market. Industry watchers speculate this OEM partner is likely Volkswagen Group, given their existing relationship. MobilEye's Level 4 autonomous driving system is already being piloted in Volkswagen's ID Buzz electric vans on the streets of Austin. The ISA is expected to debut on three more brands in 2024 as automakers race to enhance safety and capabilities in the dawning age of self-driving vehicles.
