Chinese automaker BYD broadens its electric vehicle (EV) offering in Europe with the introduction of the 'Seal U,' an SUV derived from the Seal sedan. This announcement comes as BYD showcases six new models at the ongoing 2023 IAA Mobility event in Munich. The 'Seal U,' where 'U' stands for "utility," will be available in two variants with different LFP battery capacities. Additionally, BYD will introduce its Chinese brand Denza, a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, to the European audience for the first time, featuring the Denza D9 large van. As a matter of fact, BYD showcased its Seal electric sedan at the 2023 Auto Expo as well, confirming the launch of the company’s third EV next year.
According to BYD, while both the Seal and the SUV offshoot offer innovative technology for safety, comfort, and performance, they cater to different customer preferences. The first version will have a 71.8 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of 420 km, while the second variant will feature an 87 kWh battery, extending the range to 500 km on the WLTP cycle.
Specific technical details regarding the electric drivetrain, charging capabilities, cargo capacity, and other features are yet to be revealed. However, given the Seal U's lineage as a derivative of the Seal sedan, certain expectations regarding its attributes can be reasonably anticipated.
BYD's expansion of its European EV lineup reflects the growing demand for electric mobility options in the region. The addition of the 'Seal U' SUV further diversifies BYD's offerings, aiming to cater to a broader range of consumers with varying needs and preferences in the electric vehicle market.
