The A4 bows out after being in production for 30 years.
Audi has revealed the new A5 sedan and station wagon. However, the big news is that the Audi A4 has been discontinued and is replaced by the new offering. The Audi A4 has been in production for the past 30 years. The new A5 will also get the S5 models in the sedan and station wagon body styles.
The new nomenclature for Audi’s compact luxury sedan comes because of the brand’s new naming scheme. Going forward, all internal combustion engine (ICE) models will have an odd number, while electric vehicles (EVs) will have an even number. Furthermore, the A5 will be the first model line to be based on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture.

The Audi A5 has a completely new design and looks more like the Audi e-tron GT now. Compared to the A5 Sportback, the new A5 sedan has a more conventional design. The new large grille with a honeycomb pattern is now flanked by slim headlamps and massive air intakes. The boot of the new A5 opens with the rear windshield, making it a hatch and this is a segment-unique feature. However, this function can be seen on other models from the Volkswagen Group, primarily in Skoda and Audi sedans. It also gets LED headlamps and OLED taillamps.
Inside, the Audi A5 gets a new curved display, as seen in the new Q6 e-tron. The curved display has a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.9-inch display for the front passenger. It also gets a configurable head-up display that allows drivers to control vehicle and infotainment functions. Audi claims it has used a human-centric design that focuses on the needs of the users.

Powering the new A5 are a plethora of powertrains. While there are many pure ICE options, there are also mild hybrid powertrains. The latter gets a 201 bhp, 2.0-litre diesel engine and a 362 bhp, 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine. Both engines get a 48V mild hybrid system which adds up to 24 bhp. While the diesel gets the option of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the V6 is only available with the latter.
The other powerplant includes a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in two states of tune. The entry-level engine produces 148 bhp and only gets front-wheel drive configuration, while the other produces 201 bhp and also gets all-wheel drive. All four engines come with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

While Audi India hasn’t confirmed the A5’s India launch, expect the new luxury sedan to come to our shores by sometime next year. The A4 is currently priced between ₹46.02 - 50.67 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and the new A5 is likely to be priced at a slight premium. The new Audi A5 will rival the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class when it is launched in India.
