The new BMW 5 Series rivals the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the Volvo S90 in India.
BMW India has launched the new generation 5 Series in the country, priced at ₹72.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India), available in its long wheelbase version. Competing against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the 5 Series arrives in its longest form yet, aiming to spice up the luxury sedan segment, where it will also rival the Audi A6 and the Volvo S90. Following the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine, the 5 Series remains one of the brand's most favoured models, with the 8th generation version expected to solidify BMW’s dominance in the segment.
Staying true to BMW's tradition of bold and unconventional design, the new 5 Series features a striking front fascia dominated by a large signature kidney grille with golden vertical slats and illumination for extra flair. This dramatic grille is complemented by sleek, angular headlights and a sharply contoured bumper, giving the car an assertive and aggressive appearance. The extended wheelbase is prominent from the side, highlighting the car's elongated profile. Buyers can choose between 18-inch ten-spoke rims or 19-inch fourteen-spoke rims, both equipped with standard-profile tyres. The sloping roofline adds a coupe-like silhouette, while the rear end boasts flat LED tail lamps and a sporty diffuser, reinforcing the car's dynamic aesthetics.
Inside, the new BMW 5 Series has undergone significant upgrades with a focus on minimalism and seamless integration. The dashboard incorporates almost invisible AC vents, and two large screens dominate the cabin—one for the infotainment system and another for the digital driver's display. The extended wheelbase ensures generous legroom for rear passengers, enhancing overall comfort. BMW has also embraced sustainability, using eco-friendly materials for the seat upholstery, steering wheel, and door pads, aligning with the growing trend among luxury car manufacturers to incorporate environmentally conscious materials without sacrificing luxury.
The 2024 BMW 5 Series is equipped with advanced features, including a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, ambient lighting, a heads-up display, and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Surround sound system, all contributing to an elevated driving experience. Additional conveniences include type-C USB charging ports and a four-zone climate control system.
Safety is paramount in the new 5 Series, with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, and a suite of electronic aids such as directly controlled wheel slip limitation, cornering brake assist, and trailer stability control.
The new BMW 5 Series is available in the 530Li M Sport variant, which features a 2.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, delivering 205 bhp and 330 Nm of torque. This engine is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A diesel variant is expected in the future, likely offering a 2.0-litre engine producing 194 bhp and 400 Nm of torque.
