Bajaj’s Rakesh Sharma states that larger players are now going to take charge in the Indian electric movement
With FAME-II subsidies nearing its proposed end come March 21, 2024, electric two-wheeler manufacturers are preparing for a change in their approach. And amongst those is Bajaj who believes the market will now slowly recognise and favour the big players in the days to come. More so, we have come to know that there are a lot more Chetak products (Bajaj Auto’s EV division) in the pipeline for 2024.
In a recent interview, Bajaj’s Rakesh Sharma said, "We will be launching a new model post-festive season under the Chetak family, post that every quarter you will see something new on Chetak every quarter. By the same time next year, we will have a decent portfolio and reach to grow the EV business."
The first of these new Chetak products will be the more affordable e-scooter we spotted a couple of weeks ago. It was spotted running a hub motor and is likely to miss out on a few features, making it even more barebones than the version currently on sale.
The lack of subsidy going forward is bound to hurt the small players and as a result, EV sales in general have been slow for the past few months. Sharma expects this to improve in the festive time as well as the run up to the FAME-II deadline. This would ideally hint at more quality products to look forward to in the future, ones that don’t quite just rely on government subsidies to help further its case but rather showcase the best of Indian ingenuity.
