Renault India has not officially announced a launch timeline.
The new-generation Renault Kwid EV has been spotted once again undergoing testing on Indian roads, signalling the French automaker’s plans to introduce its electric vehicle portfolio in the country. The test mule, seen on a flatbed truck near Chennai airport, offers a clearer look at the upcoming electric hatchback, with reduced camouflage revealing key design details.
This is not the first sighting of the Kwid EV on Indian soil. The vehicle was previously spotted in August 2024, albeit with heavier camouflage. The latest prototype reveals Y-shaped LED taillights, a rear wiper, and steel wheels—elements consistent with the design of the Dacia Spring EV, the global counterpart of the upcoming model.
The Dacia Spring EV, which made its global debut in February 2023, will be rebranded as a Renault for the Indian market. The rebadging strategy aligns with Renault’s approach in other international markets where Dacia models are localised under the Renault brand.
Internationally, the Kwid EV is offered with two motor configurations. A 44 bhp electric motor powers the standard variant, while higher trims come equipped with a more powerful 64 bhp unit. Both versions draw power from a 26.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which delivers an estimated range of up to 220 km on a full charge, depending on driving conditions and variant.
Technical specifications for the India-bound model have not yet been confirmed. However, it is expected that the EV will remain closely aligned with the international version in terms of powertrain and features, possibly with minor tweaks to suit local driving conditions and cost expectations.
The Kwid EV is expected to target the entry-level electric segment, competing with models like the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV. Given its compact dimensions and urban-focused range, the Kwid EV will likely be positioned as an accessible city commuter, catering to first-time EV buyers.
Renault India has not officially announced a launch timeline, but the ongoing road tests suggest that the vehicle is in an advanced stage of development. More details are likely to emerge in the coming months, potentially leading to an official unveiling by late 2025.
