The teaser image reveals the silhouette of the ninth-gen Volkswagen Golf partially which is still some time away from production.
Volkswagen has teased the much-awaited ninth-gen Golf on social media. Also called the Golf Mk9, the first teaser image of the hot hatchback reveals a fresh new look. The next-gen Golf will mark a new and very big chapter in VW’s shift to electrification as it will be offered with both electric (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains.
Volkswagen is preparing to introduce a new generation of electric vehicles, beginning with the ID. Polo, which is expected to debut next month. This will be followed by several additional models, including the ID. Polo GTI, ID. Cross, and ID. Tiguan, along with two more electric vehicles planned for launch in 2026. Following this EV rollout, Volkswagen will introduce the ninth-generation Golf, which is expected to make its debut not before 2028.
The latest teaser image has been shared by German trade union IG Metall during a works council meeting at its Wolfsburg facility on Wednesday. Historically, every generation of the Golf has been produced in this facility till date and the upcoming ninth-gen model of the hot hatchback is also expected to be produced here.

Reports indicate that the upcoming next-gen Golf EV will be underpinned by VW’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is being developed in collaboration with Rivian. This architecture is expected to provide significantly greater control over a vehicle’s hardware, enabling more flexibility to modify and refine its characteristics through OTA updates. If the SSP also underpins the upcoming gasoline-powered Golf, we can expect some hybrid powertrains being introduced too.
No other details are currently available at this point in time since the car is still at least a couple of years from reaching production. However, a recent Autocar report mentions that the EV version of the upcoming Golf will be named ID.Golf. It is too soon to predict if Volkswagen will bring the new Golf to India or not, although the current Golf GTI is on sale in the country in limited numbers.
