This in-construction all-solid-state battery will have twice the energy density and significantly shorter charge time.
Nissan has showcased its new all-solid-state battery pilot line at its Yokohama plant in Japan. Although still in construction, Nissan will implement this new kind of battery in a wide range of vehicle segments including, pickup trucks as well.
Unlike regular lithium-ion batteries, Nissan’s all-solid-state battery will have a higher energy density and significantly shorter charging time, courtesy of superior charge and discharge performance. Coupled with the fact lower-cost materials have been used to make the battery, the costs of EVs equipped with this battery will also be significantly lower.
Nissan’s all-solid-state batteries have been developed as part of the Nissan Ambition 2030 program. The first EV from the marque equipped with this battery will launch by fiscal year 2028. Nissan is also promoting development and innovative manufacturing technologies for the batteries via this new pilot line. Along the sidelines, it is also conducting wide-ranging research and development, from molecular-level battery material research to electric vehicle development, and even city development using EVs as storage batteries.
