The new EV policy has an outlay of ₹1993 crores and will be effective for the next 5 years in the state.
Maharashtra has introduced a comprehensive five-year electric vehicle policy with a budget of ₹1,993 crore. This is more than double the previous allocation of ₹930 crore for the previous EV policy. This policy aims to achieve 30 per cent electric vehicle adoption across the state by 2030.
The new scheme will offer substantial incentives for commercial vehicles with subsidies up to ₹2 lakh for four-wheelers and ₹20 lakh for electric buses. These benefits will cover up to 25,000 four-wheelers and 1,500 buses. Unlike the previous policy, personal electric cars are no longer eligible for subsidies.
Tax exemptions continue for all electric vehicles, with complete waiver of motor vehicle tax and registration fees. The policy has also introduced toll-free travel for electric vehicles on three major routes: Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
Infrastructure development is very central to the new EV policy, mandating charging stations every 25 kilometres on highways and at government offices. It has also been mandated that new residential buildings must include community charging points, whilst commercial buildings will require 50 per cent parking allocation for charging facilities.
Maharashtra ranked second nationally in electric vehicle sales during FY2025, with 2,46,221 units sold, contributing 12.52 per cent of India's market. The state leads in multiple categories: two-wheelers with 2,11,880 units (18 per cent national share), passenger cars with 17,133 units (16 per cent share), and buses with 2,104 units (24 per cent share). All segments showed strong growth, with increases of 15 per cent, 21 per cent, and 24 per cent, respectively.
The state's automotive manufacturing base, including Tata Motors, Mahindra, Force Motors, Bajaj Auto, Kinetic Group, and Piaggio, supports this growth. Since 2015, Maharashtra has sold 7,13,986 electric vehicles, establishing itself as a key player in India's sustainable transport transition.
