The Öhlins SmartEC3 dynamically adjusts suspension settings based on motorcycle behaviour and rider input.
Öhlins, renowned for its expertise in suspension systems, introduces the SmartEC3 – a semi-active suspension system. This recently made its debut on the 2024 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. This system marks an advancement by focusing on dynamic adaptability and optimal performance.
To start with hardware, Öhlins has equipped the 2024 CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP with Öhlins 43 mm S-EC3 (SV) NPX USD fork and TTX36 EC monoshock .
Öhlins SmartEC3 represents a significant technological leap, integrating top-tier suspension components with state-of-the-art electronic controls. In addition to manually adjustable systems from Öhlins which are already so good, SmartEC3 dynamically responds to rider input, terrain variations, and the forces of acceleration and braking. This just acts like another set of eyes for the rider who continuously calibrates the suspension for the most optimal performance.
At the core of SmartEC3 is Öhlins' Objective Base Tuning Interface (OBTi). This tuning interface enables the suspension system to adjust dynamically based on braking, weight transfer, and acceleration.
Inspired by MotoGP's ride height devices, the system enhances cornering grip, optimises traction under braking and acceleration, and mitigates wheelies during acceleration.
SmartEC3 offers four semi-active suspension algorithms – Sport, Track, Rain, and Manual. These settings can be adjusted on the fly. This allows riders to tailor the suspension performance based on their preferences and the riding environment. Whether on a racetrack or navigating through diverse weather conditions, SmartEC3 adapts to deliver optimal performance.
Seeing this suspension on the Honda Fireblade SP serves as a showcase for the system's capabilities. It also hints towards potential inclusion in other high-performance models. Not just a mere preview, it subtly winks at the possibility of gracing other high-performance models.
