Ola Electric is set to upgrade its electric scooters with advanced 4680 battery cells starting September 2025, the auspicious month of Navratri. This marks a major shift in its battery technology. The move aims to enhance range, charging speed, and durability, but will this lead to a price hike for consumers? We tell all.

Current vs. New Battery Tech

Currently, Ola scooters like the S1 Pro use 2170 lithium-ion cells with NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) chemistry, offering a 3.97 kWh pack and a claimed range of 181 km. The new 4680 cells—named after their dimensions (46mm diameter, 80mm height)—are larger, more energy-dense, and use improved chemistry (likely NMC 2.0 or silicon-anode tech).

Key Benefits of 4680 Cells

• Higher Energy Density: More range (potentially 200+ km) without increasing battery size.

• Faster Charging: Reduced charging time due to better thermal management.

• Lower Manufacturing Cost: Tesla claims 4680 cells are 14% cheaper to produce

If Ola achieves similar savings, it could offset price hikes.

Will Ola Scooters Become More Expensive?

While 4680 cells are cost-efficient at scale, initial adoption may lead to a 5-10% price increase due to R&D and new production lines. However, Ola could absorb some costs to stay competitive, especially with rivals like Ather and TVS still using 2170 cells.
