The rare earth magnet-free motor will help Ola’s cause greatly.
Ola has shown off its new electric motor at its Sankalp 2025 event, the highlight being it doesn’t use rare earth magnets but rather ferrite magnets. Given the on-going geopolitical crisis due to which the availability of rare earth magnets has been severely affected, this alternate solution could very well be something that Ola will benefit from.
Bajaj and TVS have already hinted at slowing down production of their electric scooters, which could mean the electric space would once again witness some slowdown. Already in July, Bajaj has slashed production down to roughly 12,000 units. Hence, this should bode well for Ola who will look to cement its top spot in the EV space soon.
The trailer showcases the new ferrite magnet motor is put into action in the Roadster X: the company’s first electric motorcycle. However, it is currently under development and will be put into production soon. On the electric motorcycle, the motor comes in two tunes, an 11 kW or a 7 kW peak power rating. Ola claims the Roadster X in its highest trim can go from standstill to 40 kmph in 2.7 seconds and tops out at 125 kmph.
