Sony's much-anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro console, a mid-generation refresh, will not be launching in India for the foreseeable future, the company confirmed on Friday. This delay is due to a complex spectrum dispute in India.
“PS5 Pro will not be available in some countries (which presently includes India) where 6GHz wireless band used in IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) has not yet been allowed,” Sony told Acko Byte in a statement.

The PlayStation 5 Pro, which was launched in many markets on Thursday, will not be making its way to India anytime soon. Sony has cited a specific reason for this delay, which may result in the console's Indian launch being indefinitely postponed.
The PS5 Pro supports the new WiFi 7 standard, which uses the 6 gigahertz spectrum band. This spectrum has been a point of contention in India, as the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) -- representing major telecom players like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea -- has pushed strongly for this spectrum to be reserved for 5G mobile Internet.
It is pertinent to note that the Apple iPhone 16 series, the Google Pixel 8 and above models, Samsung Galaxy S24 line, OnePlus 12 and above, and Vivo x100 series all have WiFi 7. However, it is likely that the OEMs disable it in firmware in the country.
The lack of the PS5 Pro in the Indian market will be a disappointment for avid gamers in the country. The mid-generation console refresh often brings significant performance upgrades and new features.
This delay may also impact the availability and pricing of the standard PlayStation 5 in India, as the company focuses its efforts on other markets.
