Originally destined to be an all-electric model, the second-generation Macan will return to its ICE roots soon.
Porsche has confirmed plans to introduce a new internal combustion engine (ICE) Macan model before the end of the decade following lower-than-expected sales for the all-electric second-generation version.
Originally launched for the 2025 model year exclusively as an electric vehicle, the Macan EV saw sales drop by approximately 40% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Tentatively targeted for a 2028 release as a 2029 model, the upcoming combustion engine Macan will sell alongside the electric version rather than replacing it.
Addressing the strategic adjustment, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters told AutoGuide that the manufacturer must carefully manage investments across petrol and electric powertrains within the same segment while recalibrating its internal combustion product roadmap. Leiters highlighted that offering both propulsion choices will provide customers with a more balanced selection across electric and gasoline models, mirroring multi-powertrain strategies utilised by competitors such as BMW.

Despite adjusting its Macan strategy, Porsche remains committed to electric mobility across other product lines, continuing work on battery-powered successors to the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster.
However, Porsche has ruled out a fully electric or plug-in hybrid 911 due to package size and weight constraints, opting instead for performance hybridisation via the Carrera GTS model's transmission-integrated T-Hybrid system.
Porsche will launch a new gasoline-powered Macan around 2028 alongside the existing EV after first-half 2026 electric sales fell 40%, while continuing hybrid and EV development across its broader sports car lineup.
