The mid-engined concept, shown in New York, previews a permanent model line that will sit above Porsche's bestselling sports car.

Porsche has unveiled the Mission S, a mid-engined concept that signals a new super sports car line positioned above the 911, at a world premiere in New York on Thursday. The German carmaker showed the vision model on a pier in Queens overlooking the Manhattan skyline, the same spot where the first photographs of the mid-engined 550 Spyder, Porsche's original sports car, were taken in 1953.

Unlike a one-off hypercar, Porsche says the Mission S previews a platform intended for lasting production. "The Mission S represents a mid-engined super sports car platform positioned above the 911 – not as a one-off hypercar, but as a permanent and versatile addition to our customer offering," said Dr Michael Leiters, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. It would be the first time since the limited-run 918 Spyder, which ended production in 2015, that Porsche has fielded a model above the 911 on an ongoing basis.

The design draws heavily on Porsche's back catalogue. Round headlights and torpedo-style fenders recall the 911, while shut lines merging into the light graphics nod to the G-model. The flat nose borrows from the GT1, as does a car-in-car element at the rear, and the roofline beneath the active rear wing echoes the 959. A cooling arrangement inspired by the 917's radiator fan and wheels based on the 928's dial design complete the references. "The Mission S is the result of a forward-looking, holistic design strategy," said Tobias Sühlmann, Head of Style Porsche, adding that it signals direction for the brand's future portfolio.

Inside, Porsche has dispensed with a fixed central or passenger display, offering instead a retractable, MagSafe-compatible smartphone mount and five round instruments that combine analogue needles with digital readouts behind the wheel. The cabin, finished in Firn White Metallic, Light Red Metallic, Black Chrome and Special Black, takes its layout cues from the 550 Spyder and 356.

No launch date, price or powertrain has been confirmed, and Porsche has said customer demand will shape what eventually reaches production.

The reveal comes as Porsche's global deliveries have fallen for a second straight year, even as 911 sales have held firm, underlining the brand's reliance on its sports car core. In India, where Porsche sold 1,006 cars in 2024 before volumes eased to 697 in the last financial year, the 911 remains the entry point to this territory, priced between Rs 2.11 crore and Rs 3.82 crore. Brand director Ashutosh Dixit has pointed to rising demand among Indian buyers for individualised, bespoke configurations, a trend a flagship above the 911 would be well placed to serve.
