The functionality is being introduced across all Renault models equipped with the openR link infotainment system.
Renault has begun rolling out a software update for its openR link infotainment system, introducing Google Gemini alongside new applications including Waze, HBO Max and Amazon Music on selected vehicles produced since 2022. The update will also be made available to existing compatible vehicles through an over-the-air (OTA) software rollout, allowing owners to access the latest features without visiting a dealership.
With the update, Google Gemini replaces Google Assistant as the built-in voice assistant. The integrated version of Gemini is capable of controlling various vehicle functions directly, including air conditioning and system settings, enabling drivers to access key controls using natural voice commands.
The functionality is being introduced across all Renault models equipped with the openR link infotainment system, which made its debut in 2022 with the Megane E-Tech.
According to the firm, the addition of Google Gemini is intended to reduce driver distraction, simplify access to vehicle functions and enhance overall convenience during everyday driving.
The AI assistant can also retrieve vehicle-specific information, including the remaining driving range on electric vehicles (EVs), providing drivers with real-time data through voice interaction.
Renault said Google Gemini is designed to understand the context of conversations, process more complex requests and deliver more natural interactions compared with the previous voice assistant.
A future software update will introduce Gemini Live, which will allow users to interrupt the assistant while it is responding, make multiple requests in succession and switch languages seamlessly during the same conversation.
Google Gemini will be available free of charge on compatible vehicles, although drivers can choose not to opt in to the feature.
