In September 2023, the manufacturing plant functioned fully on green renewable energy.
As part of its commitment to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2045, Renault’s manufacturing plant in Oragadam, Chennai announced that it predominantly used green power for its operations during the second half of 2023.
Green power like solar, wind, and bagasse/ cogen power, comprises the energy portfolio of Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt. Ltd (RNAIPL); alongside the conventional power supplied by the Government of India.
On average the RNAIPL utilised more than 85 per cent green energy every month between July and December 2023. In September 2023, the plant used 100 per cent green energy throughout the month. “Our latest green energy milestone, with an average use of 85% green energy in the second half of 2023, demonstrates our unwavering dedication to sustainability,” said Keerthi Prakash, Managing Director, RNAIPL.
RNAIPL has an in-house solar plant with a capacity of 2.2 MW and it feeds directly to the plant’s grid. Plans to further expand this plant for 14 MW output capacity are also in the pipeline. External suppliers from the wind farms from Tirunelveli/ Coimbatore supply power harnessed from wind energy, along with additional solar energy from solar farms of Tirupur region are also sourced.

With this latest milestone, RNAIPL has managed to cut down over 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions between July and December 2023. The plant is also implementing several strategies to reduce environmental impact. Like achieving Water Positive status by 2030 that will involve harvesting rainwater and effectively reusing and recycling wastewater, etc. In addition to that, the plant is also working on reducing the energy used to manufacture a car, and by 2045 they aim to reduce this consumption by 45 per cent.
