Matt Rimac recently commented that high-end buyers don’t want electric hypercars anymore.
“The future is electric” has become such a boring statement for billionaires and trillionaires that it’s forcing high-end car manufacturers such as Rimac to reanalyse their future business plans.
Conveyed by the owner Mate Rimac himself, the CEO, at Financial Times Future of the Car Summit, he explained how the evolution of the market environment, coupled with several mandatory legislations has changed the perception of EVs. As a consequence, the aura of greatness and special attention that cars like the Rimac Nevera enjoyed for the performance it boasted has dwindled. So, much so that Rimac has not even been able to sell all 150 examples of the ultra-hyper electric car.
Launched to capture the imagination of what an electric car could do in an age and time when EV technology was still in its nascent stage. The mobility industry has embraced electrification at quite a rapid rate which in turn has made these forms of vehicles mainstream. The high-end buyers want to stand out from the rest of the crowd. This is where Mate concludes that “something analogue” is now more appealing compared to a hi-tech fast electric car.
Will this preference change lead to Rimac building an ICE-powered supercar in the future? The possibilities might be slim, but not nil. As Rimac-owned Bugatti inches close to showcase its new naturally-aspirated V16 engine, a reduction from their mammoth W16 engine that has powered both the legendary Chiron and Veyron – Rimac can very well use this new mill in the future. The question now lies in how many years away are we from this inevitable truth.
