After being rumoured for the last couple of weeks, Samsung has officially announced that the next Galaxy Unpacked event will be held on January 17 at 11:30 PM IST as an in-person event at the SAP Centre in San Jose, California. The event will be streamed live across various Samsung channels, including YouTube. At the Unpacked event, Samsung is expected to launch its 2024 flagship smartphone — the Galaxy S24 Ultra and its siblings.
Samsung has already opened up pre-reservations in India and is teasing something called Galaxy AI. Many believe Galaxy AI to be the on-device generative AI capability that Samsung has integrated, as it plans to compete with the likes of what Google is doing with the Tensor G3 chipset on the Pixel 8 line, with new generative AI features like Magic Eraser, Editor, and Audio Editor.
The pre-reservations promise benefits up to ₹5,000, but right now, users will not know for sure what they are getting into.
That being said, we do know something about the Galaxy S24 series. The main flagship, the Ultra variant of the phone, is expected to feature a titanium chassis, much like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which could result in a lighter phone. Samsung is also slated to abandon the curved cover glass for a flat panel, something that hasn’t happened with the Galaxy S series since the Galaxy S6 in 2014. In terms of processing horsepower, it will be powered by one Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 variant, which will likely be overclocked and branded as custom silicon for Samsung, alongside an Exynos 2400 variant.
Samsung is also expected to continue its use of the 200-megapixel ISOCELL cameras in these phones. Samsung also tends to showcase new laptops at its Galaxy Unpacked events — so perhaps it could release more new models and share more details about its new Intel Meteor Lake-based notebooks that were announced in December.
Usually, the Galaxy Unpacked event happens in February, but the fact that it has been shifted to January, a week after CES, shows the urgency Samsung has and how important this phone is for the brand.
