Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will unveil its next-generation foldable smartphones on July 26.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will unveil its next-generation foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, at an event in South Korea on July 26, according to a company announcement.

The South Korean tech giant is hosting an in-person event in Seoul which will also be streamed live on its YouTube channel and website at 1630 IST.

Samsung pioneered the mainstream foldable smartphone market in 2019 with the launch of its first Galaxy Fold. The company is aiming to cement its lead as Chinese rivals enter the space.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung's premium foldable, is expected to feature upgraded internals like the latest Qualcomm Inc Snapdragon 8+Gen 2 processor and a new "raindrop" hinge design that reduces the visibility of the fold, according to leaks and industry analysts. However, the phone may lack official IP68 water resistance certification.

The clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 5 will likely see more significant upgrades, including a larger outer display that allows full app use, improved cameras, and IP68 water resistance, a first for Samsung's flip-style foldable line, analysts said.

The new foldables are anticipated to run on Android 14 with Samsung's One UI software, which may offer enhanced multitasking capabilities to take advantage of the flexible displays.

With upgraded hardware and software, Samsung appears poised to further solidify its lead in the burgeoning foldable phone market, even as rivals like Motorola and OPPO ready new foldable models to challenge the category leader.

The world's largest smartphone maker is betting big on foldables as a growth driver as the overall smartphone market plateaus, though the devices still make up a fraction of total shipments. Samsung sold some 7 million foldables last year, compared to roughly 300 million phones overall.
