SpaceX and Tesla Confirm $16.8 Billion Chip Plant in Texas

SpaceX and Tesla confirmed on 6 August that they will build a semiconductor fabrication plant in Grimes County, Texas, with an initial investment exceeding $16.8 billion (roughly Rs 1.4 lakh crore). Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the site alongside the companies, describing the venture, named Terafab, as a project befitting a state "where big ideas grow even bigger."

The plant will sit on land near the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, about 70 miles northwest of Houston, and is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs in its first phase. Filings reviewed earlier this year suggest the total investment across all planned phases could eventually reach $119 billion, though that figure remains aspirational rather than committed.

Terafab is not a satellite or components factory but a full semiconductor fab, combining chip fabrication, memory production, advanced packaging and testing under one roof. It is a joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, which merged with SpaceX in February, with Intel signed on as foundry partner using its forthcoming 14A process node. Two chip families are planned: an edge-processing chip for Tesla's Optimus robots and self-driving systems, and a radiation-hardened design intended to power SpaceX's proposed orbital data centres.

Elon Musk, chief executive of both Tesla and SpaceX, said the plant would bring "cutting-edge manufacturing to America" and enable chip production "at scale for use on Earth and in space." He has previously said roughly three-quarters of Terafab's output is destined for space-based computing rather than terrestrial use, underlining how closely the project is tied to SpaceX's ambitions rather than Tesla's alone.

The headline investment figure marks a reduction from earlier estimates. A county filing in May had put the first phase at $55 billion; when Musk first unveiled the concept in March, early costings ran to $20-25 billion. Enforceable commitments in Grimes County's agreement are more modest still — a minimum $5 billion investment by 2030 and 1,800 jobs by 2035 — with the company retaining the right to walk away on 30 days' notice.

Wall Street has responded with caution. Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco called the undertaking "a Herculean task," while Bernstein estimated that building enough capacity for Musk's stated target of one terawatt of annual compute could cost between $5 trillion and $13 trillion. Neither bank expects meaningful chip output before 2028.

Locally, the abatement has drawn scrutiny. Grimes County approved a nominal 100 percent property-tax break over ten years, though SpaceX's own attorneys put the effective rate closer to 78 percent once a $20 million annual payment is factored in. Some residents have questioned the scale of concessions granted to the world's richest man's companies, even as officials tout the deal as transformative for the county's economy.
