Hyundai’s steady growth path in India continues and the growth in sales in May, though marginal, continues to push the company ahead in the market as the second carmaker in India. In May 2024, the SUV contribution to overall sales were 67 per cent. The Creta is the one leading the pack registering sales of over 14,000 units, followed by the Venue (over 9,000 units) and the Exter in third place (over 7,900 units).
The year-on-year growth in SUV sales has been 30 per cent and the company expects this number to be higher as the demand for its cars continue to grow. The journey of share of SUVs driving sales for Hyundai has been a fast-paced one. The contribution of SUVs to overall sales for Hyundai was around 42.5 per cent in 2020, four years later that has gone up to 67 per cent.
While the overall pending order for the company is around 65,000, the Creta accounts for about 50 per cent of it with 33,000 pending orders. The overall dealer stock currently is 44,774 units which Hyundai says is good for 4 weeks so the waiting period has gone down according to the company’s COO, Tarun Garg. Speaking to the media he said, “Sales have been steady and waiting periods too have come down to up to 4 weeks. This is a number we are happy with but we definitely will do more to bring the waiting period down further.”
This is good news for those who are buying the Creta, Exter and Venue, but the number goes up when it comes to N Line models. The Creta N Line, for example, has a massive waiting period of 10 weeks. The other N Line models too have a longer wait and while the company is trying to ramp up production, it’s going to be a while before we see any results.
