Planning to buy an SUV in 2024? Read this guide before you make a decision.
2024, like a few years before it, seems like a year where SUVs galore. The upcoming year includes many facelifts as well as brand-new models reaching our shores. Looking to buy a new car next year? This list should help you narrow down your choices.
Expected Launch: January 2024
The year's first launch will be the recently revealed Kia Sonet facelift. The midlife cycle update to the popular subcompact SUV sees it get a slight design update and a major addition to the features list. The Sonet facelift became the second subcompact SUV after the Hyundai Venue to get ADAS. Kia’s smallest offering retains the same powertrain options as before.
Expected Launch: January 2024
Hyundai will unveil the much-awaited facelift for the Creta on January 16. While there is no confirmation about the launch, it can either come at the time of unveiling or even a few weeks later. The Creta facelift is expected to get the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that debuted in the Verna. It might get a Hyundai Palisade-like design and an extensive update to the features list.
Expected Launch: Early 2024
Mercedes-Benz’s smallest SUV, the GLA, got a facelift globally in March this year. With the facelift, it gets new bumpers, grille and lights as well as new features like wireless smartphone connectivity and a 360-degree camera. Mechanically, the GLA facelift gets electrified powertrains with the option of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. It remains to be seen if the latter will come to India.
Expected Launch: Early 2024
Just like the GLA, the three-row Mercedes-Benz GLB also got a facelift globally last year with similar updates. The boxy, seven-seat SUV also gets electrified powertrains but which ones will come to India will only be revealed later.
Expected Launch: January 8, 2024
Mercedes-Benz’s flagship SUV’s facelift is also due to come to India. Like the other SUVs from the brand, the GLS-Class also gets mild cosmetic and features updates. Like the GLE and GLC, the GLS also gets the transparent bonnet feature. Globally, the GLS gets four powertrain options which include two petrol and two diesel options. In India, expect Mercedes-Benz to launch only diesel engines as the current model also only gets one diesel engine option – the GLS 400d 4Matic.
Expected Launch: Late 2024
Tata Motors’ first coupe-SUV will be the Curvv but will come as an EV first. It will be positioned above the Nexon in Tata Motors’ line-up. While details for the EV version are yet to be revealed, the ICE version is expected to come with Tata Motors’ new 1.2-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine.
Expected Launch: Late 2024
Unveiled earlier this year, the Q8 gets only mild cosmetic updates with the biggest change being the new HD Matrix LED headlights. Mechanically, there’s no change as it continues with the same powertrain options as before. Expect the India-spec model to carry on with the 3.0-litre petrol engine producing 335 bhp. Expected Launch: Mid-2024
The hotly anticipated 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar is expected to carry forward the same powertrain options as the 3-door version. However, the upcoming SUV will have more features such as a sunroof and a bigger touchscreen. While the current model also has seating for four passengers, the 5-door version should help improve space in the second row, and increase the boot space as well.

Currently serving as Mahindra’s smallest SUV in India, the XUV300’s facelift has been long overdue. The subcompact SUV is expected to have its exterior design inspired by Mahindra’s BE range and get a major interior design revision. The XUV300 facelift is expected to continue with the same powertrain options including two turbo-petrol mills and a diesel unit.
Expected Launch: Mid-Late 2024
Unveiled globally just last month, the Tucson facelift has the biggest changes inside. It gets a twin-screen setup for the instrument cluster and the infotainment touchscreen. The full-touch panel for the HVAC and media controls have been replaced with a mix of physical and digital controls and it gets a new steering wheel.

Skoda’s flagship model in India, the Kodiaq, recently got a new generation in the international market. The new Kodiaq has an evolutionary design but is a bit lower and longer than before. The highlights of the interior are the free-standing 13-inch touchscreen and three knobs that control many of the car’s functions. The new Kodiaq gets five powertrain options including a plug-in hybrid version. Like the current-gen model, the new Kodiaq could also come to India in limited numbers as a completely built unit (CBU) import.
Expected Launch: Mid 2024
Like the Mahindra Thar 5-door, Force Motors is also gearing up to launch an extended version of the Gurkha. It is likely to come with multiple seating configurations. Expect the Gurkha 5-door to carry forward the same Mercedes-Benz-sourced 2.6-litre diesel engine and a 5-speed gearbox.
Expected Launch: Early 2024
Maserati’s most affordable SUV in India will soon be the Grecale. Maserati will first launch the ICE version with the all-electric version, called the Folgore, expected to arrive later next year. The Grecale will be offered in three trims – GT, Modena and Trofeo. The first two get a mild-hybrid petrol engine, while the Trofeo shares its 3.0-litre V6 engine with the MC20 supercar.
Expected Launch: Mid-Late 2024
The third-gen Mini Countryman, for the first time, is being offered with two electric powertrain options along with petrol and diesel powertrains. It remains to be seen which powertrains will come to India but expect Mini to offer the electric version as well.
Expected Launch: Early 2024
Based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, the Urban Cruiser Taisor will mark the re-entry of Toyota in the sub-4 metre SUV/crossover segment. Apart from a different exterior design, the Taisor will be mechanically similar to the Fronx and get the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine options.
Expected Launch: Mid-Late 2024
Along with launching a bunch of new models by 2025, Nissan will also launch a facelift of its sole product in India, the Magnite. Not much is known about the Magnite facelift but it will have a slightly altered exterior and interior design. However, there will be no change in the powertrain options on offer.
