The Wagon R is an extremely popular vehicle, not just in India, but also globally. The Wagon R nameplate has crossed the 10 million global sales milestone, which was completed in June 2025. In India, Maruti Suzuki has sold 3.1 million Wagon Rs since its inception in the country in 1999.
Suzuki launched the Wagon R in Japan in 1993, and then production began in India and Hungary in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Even before production began in India, Suzuki had sold more than 1 million Wagon Rs across the globe. Each subsequent 1 million sales milestone came in 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2018, 2022 and 2025. On an average, Suzuki sold 1 million Wagon Rs in the world every two years.
The Wagon R is manufactured in Japan, India, Hungary, and Indonesia, among other regions and is sold in more than 75 countries in Asia and Europe. Interestingly, Suzuki hasn’t kept the Wagon R the same around the world. The hatchback has been adapted to various needs of different markets. Meaning, the Wagon R sold in Japan follows the Kei car rules – under 660 cc engine making no more than 63 bhp, and length and height under 3.4 metres and 2 metres, respectively. Whereas, in other markets the Wagon R is a larger car with bigger engines, depending on the demand of the market. Suzuki has said it will continue to develop the Wagon R as per the needs of each market.
As mentioned earlier, Maruti Suzuki launched the Wagon R in India in 1999. The first generation of the ‘tall-boy’ hatchback was sold in India for 11 years, and had two facelifts. The second generation came to India in 2010 and it got a facelift in 2013. In 2014, this generation of the Wagon R got a special model, called Stingray, which had a slightly different design. The third and the current generation was introduced in India in 2020 and it got a minor facelift in 2022. The first gen Wagon R came with a 1.1-litre engine, the second gen with a 1.0-litre engine and the current version comes with two engines – 1.0-litre petrol and a 1.2-litre petrol engine.
