Which of these performance-oriented hatchbacks pack the most value?
The Tata Altroz Racer has finally hit our markets. The performance-oriented version of the standard Altroz is also the brand’s most premium hatchback offering yet. A practice that was introduced in India by Hyundai way before, with its i20 line-up with the introduction of the N Line.
So, quite naturally, both are direct rivals. So, if you’re in the market searching for a premium, performance-oriented hatchback, which one of the two should you go for?
Specifications | Tata Altroz Racer | Hyundai i20 N Line |
---|---|---|
Engine | 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine | 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine |
Power | 118 bhp @ 5,500 rpm | 118 bhp @ 6000 rpm |
Torque | 170 Nm @ 1750 - 4000 rpm | 172 Nm @ 1500-4000 rpm |
Transmission | 6-speed manual | 6-speed manual/7-speed DCT |
The Tata Altroz Racer might have a slightly bigger engine (in terms of displacement), yet, its power output is the same as the Hyundai i20 N Line, but its torque is slightly less. However, when it comes to off-the-line acceleration, the Tata Altroz Racer will hold the advantage for it produces its peak power at 500 rpm earlier. But down the line, it will be the i20 N Line, that will cross the finishing line first for it can hold on to its top speed for a longer time. Moreover, the advantage of either a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic or a 6-speed manual further makes the Hyundai i20 N Line a more flexible option as a product for consumers.
Specifications | Tata Altroz Racer | Hyundai i20 N Line |
---|---|---|
Overall Length (mm) | 3,990 | 3,995 |
Overall Width (mm) | 1,755 | 1,775 |
Overall Height (mm) | 1,523 | 1,505 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2501 | 2,580 |
From the numbers above, we can gauge that the Altroz Racer overall has a compact body style. As a consequence, the Hyundai i20 N Line benefits from a more spacious cabin than the Tata, but its bigger proportion will eat into its fuel efficiency. But on the other end of the spectrum, the compact proportions of the Altroz Racer should make it agile to drive, which should further make it all the more exciting to drive than the i20 N Line.
Given that these two hatchbacks sit at the helm of all variants of their respective badges, both come loaded to the gills with features. For starters, both the Altroz Racer and the i20 N Line are available with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless charging pad, electrically adjustable ORVM, power windows, and rear AC vents. However, the i20 N Line doesn't get wireless smartphone connectivity while the Altroz Racer does.
The Tata Altroz Racer takes matters a notch higher with ventilated cooled front seats, both driver and passenger seats get a height adjustability option, whereas the Hyundai i20 N Line’s driver’s seat is only height adjustable. The Hyundai also gets a premium 7-speaker system from Bose with subwoofers, the Altroz Racer gets an 8-speaker sound system with 4 speakers and 4 tweeters.
Tata has surpassed the Hyundai i20 N Line in this regard as well. While the latter is available in just two trims - N6 and N8 – the Altroz Racer is available in three trims – R1, R2, and R3. With more options, Tata has managed to price the Altroz really competitively.
While the Hyundai i20 N Line is priced from ₹9.99 lakh with the manual gearbox option, the Altroz Racer starts from ₹9.49 lakh (both ex-showroom prices, Delhi), making it ₹50,000 more affordable than the entry-level i20 N Line N6 variant. Beyond that, the mid-spec Altroz Racer R2 variant is priced at ₹10.49 lakh, and the top-spec Altroz Racer R3 will set you back by ₹10.99 lakh. Whereas the Hyundai i20 N Line N8 variant with the DCT gearbox and a dual-tone colour option will set you back by ₹12.52 lakh, which is almost ₹1 lakh more than the Altroz Racer R3.
Thereby, we can safely conclude that Tata has hit it out of the park with the pricing of the new Altroz Racer, and the Hyundai i20 N Line now feels like a pretty expensive proposition.
Tata Altroz Racer Variants | Price (Ex-showroom) | Hyundai i20 N Line Variants | Price |
---|---|---|---|
R1 | ₹9.49 lakh | N6 (MT) | ₹9.99 lakh |
R2 | ₹10.49 lakh | N6 (DCT) | ₹11.14 lakh |
R3 | ₹10.99 lakh | N8 (MT) | ₹11.27 lakh |
|
| N8 (DCT) | ₹12.36 lakh |
