Tata Motors May 2025 Sales Analysis: Punch Leads, Curvv Shows Promise

Tata Motors has released its sales figures for May 2025, revealing a mixed bag of performances across its passenger vehicle portfolio. While some models have shown strong year-on-year (YoY) growth and month-on-month (MoM) resilience, others continue to face volume pressures amid market headwinds and product lifecycle challenges.

Punch Retains Top Spot Despite YoY Dip

The Tata Punch remained the brand’s best-selling model in May 2025, with 13,133 units sold, though this marked a significant drop from 18,949 units in May 2024. However, it registered a 5% MoM increase compared to April 2025 (12,496 units), suggesting a gradual recovery in demand, potentially supported by ongoing offers and rural traction.

Nexon Rebounds with Strong YoY Growth

The Nexon, one of Tata’s best-selling subcompact SUVs, posted a 13,096-unit tally for May 2025, reflecting a 14% YoY growth over May 2024 (11,457 units). However, the model witnessed a 15% MoM decline from April 2025 (15,457 units). This YoY uptick could be attributed to the refreshed variant line-up and sustained interest in both EV and ICE versions.

Curvv Makes Its Presence Felt

The Tata Curvv emerged as a notable addition to the portfolio, contributing 3,063 units in May 2025. Though slightly down from April’s debut month sales of 3,149 units, the model continues to show promise in the premium coupe-SUV segment, where Tata is now testing waters against compact lifestyle offerings.

Entry-Level Hatchbacks: Tiago Gains, Altroz Drops

The Tata Tiago clocked 6,407 units, up from 5,927 units in May 2024, but down from 8,277 in April 2025. This indicates a YoY improvement of 8%, but a MoM decline of 23%, which may be attributed to seasonality and fleet segment variations. Meanwhile, the Altroz saw a sharp YoY drop of 44%, selling only 2,779 units compared to 4,983 in May 2024, though there was a mild MoM recovery from April 2025 (2,172 units).

SUVs Face Pressure: Safari and Harrier Decline

Both the Safari and Harrier continue to experience sales pressure. The Safari recorded 1,109 units in May 2025, significantly down from 1,661 units YoY and 1,340 units MoM. Similarly, the Harrier sold only 894 units, a 45% YoY decline from 1,625 units in May 2024 and down from 1,012 units in April 2025. This indicates growing competition in the mid-sized SUV segment, where new launches from rivals may be affecting Tata’s traction. However, it will be interesting to see how the Tata Harrier EV performs, its latest flagship EV once the deliveries start in the first week of July.

Subcompact Sedan Segment: Tigor’s Decline Continues

The Tigor managed just 1,076 units in May 2025, down sharply from 2,098 units in May 2024 and 1,296 units in April 2025. The model’s diminishing appeal in a segment that is shrinking overall and increasingly overshadowed by SUVs continues to challenge its position.
