Tesla has not pursued the necessary documentation for autonomous operations.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk-owned Tesla Inc. has not submitted applications for crucial regulatory approvals needed to launch autonomous taxi services in California, according to state officials who spoke Thursday, as reported by news agency Reuters. This comes just one day after Tesla CEO Musk announced plans to roll out the company's robotaxi programme in the San Francisco Bay Area within the next two months.
California's Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed that the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has not pursued the necessary documentation for autonomous operations.
"To date, Tesla has not applied for either a driverless testing or deployment permit," a spokesperson for California's Department of Motor Vehicles was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) echoed this position, stating Thursday that Tesla had not submitted applications for additional permits beyond what it currently holds. In March, the CPUC granted Tesla its initial permit in what would need to be a series of approvals for full robotaxi operations.
Tesla's existing regulatory authorisation consists only of a transportation charter-party carrier permit (TCP), which typically governs chauffeur-driven services. This permit framework allows the company to maintain vehicle fleets and provide transportation for employees through pre-scheduled arrangements, but falls short of autonomous taxi operation requirements.
The autonomous taxi initiative could be a turning point in Tesla's corporate strategy as the company grapples with declining sales across its established EV portfolio. Market challenges include intensifying competition from rival manufacturers such as Waymo and negative consumer sentiment linked to Musk's public support of far-right political positions.
