Tesla could potentially pivot toward selling data centre infrastructure, utilising the company's existing industrial power and thermal management expertise rather than proprietary microchips.
Tesla is laying the groundwork to enter the merchant data centre market, according to a newly discovered trademark application for a product called Megapod. Filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, the application indicates that the company is claiming the name for a product it has not yet formally launched.
The move comes less than a year after the electric vehicle manufacturer quietly shuttered Dojo, its highly publicised in-house artificial intelligence training supercomputer project. The trademark documentation details a complete, self-contained, and integrated computing enclosure engineered specifically to handle demanding artificial intelligence workloads.
According to the filing, the Megapod system is designed to bundle computer servers, specialised AI data processing hardware, networking equipment, power distribution units (PDUs), and advanced liquid cooling systems into a single physical unit. Essentially, the product represents a turnkey, modular data centre building block, selling the entire rack-and-room infrastructure required for AI training and inference, rather than just standalone microchips or battery packs.

While the hardware would theoretically compete with dominant rack-scale liquid-cooled systems from companies like Nvidia, industry analysts note that Tesla currently lacks a commercial merchant compute-hardware business to build upon.
However, the company does possess a highly successful energy storage business, having recently sold massive amounts of its industrial Megapack batteries to AI data centres (including Elon Musk's own xAI venture) to act as grid power buffers. A potential commercial strategy for the Megapod could see Tesla leveraging its established expertise in power electronics and industrial thermal management to sell the specialised 'shell' and utility infrastructure wrapped around third-party AI processors.
