Tesla Model Y

The latest Tesla Model Y variant features a new battery pack from LG. It remains China-exclusive as of now.

Tesla has introduced a new variant of the Model Y in China, significantly boosting its range to 821 km under the country's CLTC testing standard.

The updated model, a rear-wheel drive long-range version, is now the longest-range Model Y offered globally, a strategic move to enhance its competitiveness in the key Chinese market.

New Battery Pack

The substantial range increase is made possible by a new 78.4-kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack supplied by South Korea's LG Energy Solution. This is the same battery pack used in the recently launched long-range Model 3 variant, which also achieved a CLTC rating of 830 km.

While CLTC figures are known to be optimistic, the 821 km rating represents a big engineering achievement for the Model Y lineup.

Strategic Launch Amid Market Challenges

The launch is critical for Tesla in China, where it has faced a recent sales slump. In October, the company recorded its lowest monthly sales since November 2022 and fell out of the top 10 rankings for new energy vehicle (NEV) sales amid intensifying competition.

The new model appears to be generating immediate interest. Anecdotal reports from Tesla stores suggest strong customer enthusiasm. This demand is partly corroborated by Tesla extending delivery timelines from 2-4 weeks to 4-6 weeks just hours after the launch, indicating a high volume of initial orders.

China-Exclusive As Of Now

Clearly, China’s fiercely competitive EV landscape has spurred Tesla to introduce this new variant to remain in the game.

But, launching this Model Y option in other markets, including India, should help the brand hold its ground against BYD’s growing challenge.
