Fresh applications for homologation of the models have been submitted
Tesla’s India arrival story witnesses another development as the electric car company submits fresh applications for the homologation of its two popular and most affordable options: the Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla has been toying with the idea of entering India for years, and with the development of a free trade agreement with USA and India underway, things could look very promising for the Trump-endorsed Elon Musk-owned company.
It isn’t the first time that Tesla has filed applications in India. Seven of such applications have been granted, mainly for test cars, and another eighth was approved recently as well. Musk has been wanting to enter the Indian car market for quite some time now, after all, it is the world’s third largest car market, after China and America, between which tensions have been brewing up.
The direct impact of new sanctions between the latter two countries is hurting Tesla, and India could very well be open to adopting Tesla. There remains the current struggle with the Indian government that wants Musk to set up a manufacturing plant in India while the eccentric billionaire just wants to focus on exports to India first to assess the market.
With Indian companies like Tata and Mahindra stepping up their EV game, as well as car giants like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai also now part of the space, Indians are certainly spoilt for choice. While Tesla will definitely benefit from being in the country, it remains to be seen how Indians will perceive the cars. We hope to see some concrete announcements on Tesla’s India arrivals soon.
