Tesla has officially begun accepting pre-orders for its extended Model Y L variant in the Chinese marketplace, with pricing set at 339,000 yuan (approximately $47,184), news agency Reuters has reported. This launch represents the electric vehicle manufacturer's efforts to revive its product portfolio amid intensifying competition in the world's largest automotive market.
The original Model Y made its debut in 2020 and achieved remarkable success, claiming the title of global best-selling vehicle in 2023. However, the aging platform experienced declining sales performance in recent periods, particularly facing pressure from domestic Chinese competitors including Xiaomi's YU7 model. Additionally, broader electric vehicle demand has shown signs of softening across various international markets.
Tesla initiated its Model Y refresh strategy in January with an updated version featuring redesigned aesthetics and enhanced capabilities across Asia Pacific regions. The company subsequently filed registration documents with Chinese regulatory authorities in July for the extended Model Y L variant, demonstrating its commitment to the Chinese market.
Complementing the Model Y L launch, Tesla is also preparing to introduce an extended-range, rear-wheel-drive Model 3 variant for Chinese consumers, based on regulatory filings published by China's industrial ministry in July.
Tesla's China operations reported a concerning 8.4 per cent decline in July sales figures for locally manufactured electric vehicles, highlighting the urgent need for product refreshes and competitive positioning improvements.
