European safety watchdog, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has tested the third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan and it scored a 5-star rating. Euro NCAP tested the left-hand drive version of the Tiguan with a diesel engine but said the rating applies to all versions of the Tiguan except the two hybrid versions.
In the adult occupant protection tests, the Volkswagen Tiguan managed to score 33.5 points out of 40, receiving an 83 per cent rating. In the frontal and lateral impact tests, the Tiguan scored 10.7 points and 15.1 points out of a total of 16, respectively. In the rear impact as well as rescue and extrication test, the SUV scored 3.6 and 4 points, respectively.
Euro NCAP commented, “The passenger compartment of the Volkswagen Tiguan remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy numbers showed good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Volkswagen showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions.”
In the child occupant protection tests, the Tiguan scored 43.3 points out of 49 points, securing an 88 per cent rating. In crash test performance using a dummy of a 6-year-old and 10-year-old child, it received 24 points out of 24 that comprised frontal impact (16 points) and lateral impact (8 points). In the safety features test, it received only 7.3 points out of a possible 13 as it doesn’t come with ISOFIX, i-Size car seats, integrated CRS and top tether in the third row. Furthermore, integrated CRS is also missing in the first two rows. In the CRS installation test, the three-row SUV managed to secure all of the available 12 points. Euro NCAP commented, “In both the frontal offset and side barrier tests, good protection was provided to all critical body areas for both child dummies, and the Tiguan scored maximum points in this part of the assessment.”
For the pedestrian protection tests, the Tiguan scored 53.4 points out of 63, with a rating of 84 per cent. It secured 30.1 points out of 36 in the impact protection tests and 23.3 points out of 27 points in the impact mitigation tests. “Protection of the head of a struck pedestrian or cyclist was predominantly good or adequate. Protection of the pelvis was good or adequate, while that of the femur and of the knee and tibia was good across the whole width of the car,” noted Euro NCAP.
Finally, in the safety assist tests, the Volkswagen SUV scored 14.3 points out of 18, with a rating of 78 per cent. Euro NCAP commented that “Overall, the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system of the Volkswagen Tiguan performed well in tests of its reaction to other vehicles, including adequate performance in the head-on test scenarios.”
