21.8 km long road Expected to Save Over an Hour for Commuters Heading To Lonavala or Pune

As the inauguration of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Atal Setu, approaches this month, commuters will be required to pay a toll of ₹ 350 for a single trip on India's longest sea bridge. The toll rates were finalised in a meeting of the Maharashtra Cabinet held on Thursday.

Initially, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority had proposed a toll of ₹ 500 for a single trip, based on estimates provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which is offering development loan assistance for the project. However, the Urban Development Department (UDD) revised the toll to ₹ 350 per car.

Now, to put things into perspective, Lonavala is 90 km if you consider the route via the Airoli Bridge. If you take the route via the Vashi Bridge, then it is 75 km till Lonavala. This route is via the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. The toll cost is ₹ 45 for the Mumbai toll and an additional ₹ 270 up to Lonavala. The total adds up to ₹ 315. If you consider the journey up to Pune, then it is 70 km and total toll cost is ₹ 365. It takes 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Lonavala. Now, with this new Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, it is expected to save at least an hour of commute required to exit the Navi Mumbai region. The only catch is that you are paying ₹350 for the time that you're saving.

The toll is expected to increase by 6 percent every year. Apart from cars, mini buses will pay ₹ 560, bus/2-axle trucks ₹ 1,180, 3-axle trucks ₹ 1,290, 4-6 axle vehicles ₹ 1,850 and oversized vehicles ₹ 2,250.

The ₹ 17,843-crore, 21.8-km-long MTHL will be India’s longest sea bridge, connecting Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai. The bridge, of which 16.11 km has been built on water, will have six lanes. The MTHL will reduce the travel distance from South Mumbai to Chirle by around 30 km.
