Range anxiety can be a real thing but can be tackled by having the right EV in your garage.
Buying and owning an electric vehicle (EV) has always been riddled with a big problem – range anxiety. It can be a real thing and one way to tackle it can be by having the right EV in your garage. So here are five EVs that launched in 2023 with the highest claimed range.
Claimed range: 631 km
Hyundai’s most expensive offering in India is an EV, and what an EV it is! Priced at ₹45.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India), it also has the highest claimed range of any EV that hit our markets this year. The Ioniq 5 packs a 72.6 kWh battery pack and has a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) powering the rear wheels. The Ioniq 5 develops 214 bhp and 350 Nm. Hyundai claims the EV can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 18 minutes using a 350 kW charger.
Claimed range: 625 km
BMW’s latest flagship sedan is the i7 and it is priced at ₹2.03 crore (ex-showroom, India). It gets a 101.7 kWh battery pack and has dual electric motors powering both axles producing 536 bhp and 745 Nm. BMW says the i7’s battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 15 minutes using a 195 kW fast charger.
Claimed range: 582 km (SUV)/ 600 km (Sportback)
Audi’s flagship electric SUV, the e-tron, has a new name and is now called the Q8 e-tron. It comes in two body styles – an SUV and a coupe-SUV called Sportback – and they are priced at ₹1.26 crore and ₹1.30 crore (ex-showroom, India), respectively. Both get a 114 kWh battery (the largest battery pack in the list) but the Sportback has more range because of its better aerodynamics. The Q8 e-tron has two electric motors powering the front and rear wheels and it churns out 402 bhp and 664 Nm. Audi claims that the Q8 e-tron can be charged up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes using a 170 kW DC fast charger.
Claimed range: 600 km
Lotus made its debut in India with the Eletre, its first-ever EV globally. Prices for the Eletra range between ₹2.55 crore and ₹2.99 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), depending on the variant. The Eletre gets a 112 kWh battery pack and has a dual-motor set-up, producing up to 902 bhp and 985 Nm. Lotus claims that by using a 350 kW DC fast charger, the Eletre’s battery can be charged from 10-80 per cent in 20 minutes.
Claimed range: 550 km
Mercedes-Benz has multiple EVs in India and the latest one on offer is the EQE SUV. Mercedes offers only one variant in India – the EQE 500 4Matic SUV – and it is priced at ₹1.39 crore (ex-showroom, India). It packs a 90.56 kWh battery pack and dual-motor setup churns out 402 bhp and 858 Nm. According to Mercedes, the EQE SUV’s battery pack can be charged from 10-80 per cent in 32 minutes using a 100 kW DC fast charger.
