This has been done due to irregularities occurring in the horsepower output testing of Toyota’s diesel engines.
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has temporarily halted despatches of its diesel vehicles in India, namely the Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux. This is due to irregularities occurring in horsepower output testing for the certification of three diesel engines. TMC had commissioned Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) to develop its diesel engines and a special investigation had reported the irregularities.
The report mentions that during certification testing of three diesel engines – the 1GD, 2GD and F33A – the horsepower output performance was measured using ECUs with software different from the ones used in regular production. This implies that the results could measure values appear smoother with fewer variations. These three engines are used in 10 models globally, including the Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux.
TMC says that it has verified the engines used in production versions of its vehicles and has confirmed that they meet the regulations. Due to the findings of the report, TMC has decided to stop despatches of vehicles using these engines.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the Indian subsidiary of TMC, has also announced it will stop despatches of the Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux. In a statement to the media, TKM said “However, new order taking will continue. For cars that have already been dispatched but have not yet been delivered to the customer, we will carefully explain to our customers about this condition. Thereafter, we will proceed with registration and delivery for customers who opt to receive their vehicles.” TKM also says this does not have any impact on the emissions and safety of the three models.
TKM further added, “We would like to reassure our existing customers by stating that we believe their vehicles are unaffected by these irregularities, as this did not result in any variations in horsepower, torque or other powertrain-related values. Additionally, this has not compromised the emissions or safety of their vehicles.”
The Hilux and Fortuner use the 1GD engine displacing 2,755 cc producing 201 bhp and 500 NM of torque and is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The Innova Crysta uses the 2GD engine displacing 2393 cc producing 148 bhp and 343 Nm of torque and is solely available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
