Besides making the Hilux more fuel efficient, the new mild-hybrid system has also improved the diesel engine's refinement levels.
Toyota recently introduced the Hilux Hybrid 48v in the United Kingdom market. This new version, equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system, has been launched at £49,640 (approximately ₹55.12 lakh). The hybrid technology has not just made the diesel engine more frugal, but has also improved its overall refinement levels. It continues with the 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine found in the existing Hilux range, but with a 48V lithium-ion battery and an electric motor, it produces 201 bhp and a mighty 500 Nm of peak torque.
Toyota has also focused on refining the engine, particularly for off-road scenarios. With the hybrid system, the engine now idle at just 600 rpm, representing a 20 per cent reduction from the non-hybrid Hilux’s 720 rpm.

The new Hilux Hybrid 48v also marks a milestone as the first Hilux to feature the Multi-Terrain Select system. This technology adjusts various parameters of the pick-up truck including drive force, suspension, and hydraulic brake pressure to optimise performance across different terrains. There are six specialised off-road modes on offer here: Sand, Mud, Rock, Dirt, Deep Snow, and Auto.
Additional features include a comprehensive 360-degree camera and Toyota's Safety Sense ADAS package. The latter incorporates adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning among other safety technologies.

While there's no confirmation about if the new Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48v will launch in India or not. Even if this hybrid tech is introduced in any of the existing Toyota’s here, then the Fortuner has a better chance of getting it first. However, any further explanation would be a needless speculation, from which we’ll refrain.
