Apart from its unique styling, the Thruxton 400 is also the quickest Triumph 400 cc offering on sale.
Triumph India expanded its 400 cc motorcycle portfolio by riding in its most premium offering - the Thruxton 400. The Triumph Thruxton 400 has been launched at ₹2,74,137 (ex-showroom, Delhi) making it the second most expensive Triumph 400 cc bike for the Indian market. In comparison, the Triumph Speed 400 retails for ₹2.50 lakh and the Scrambler 400 XC is priced at ₹2.95 lakh (all prices mentioned are ex-showroom). The Thruxton 400 joins the very niche cafe racer segment and its closest rival remains the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650.
The biggest highlight of the bike is its design, which is the case with all cafe racers. The most unique design aspect is the new fairing, which takes inspiration from the Thruxton R, but the half fairing design is more modern and sporty. In profile, the cafe racer styling really comes out as the fuel tank is longer and it also gets the Monza-style fuel filler cap and bar-end mirrors. The rear mudguard is now shorter and you also get a seat cowl as standard, which is removable. The Thruxton 400 is available in four colour options - lava red gloss, pearl metallic white, phantom black and metallic racing yellow.
Moving on Triumph engineers have retuned the engine to add sportiness to go with the bike’s DNA and also to ensure that it hits a ton (161 kmph), which is kind of a prerequisite for a sporty cafe racer. The retuned motor now churns out 41.4 bhp, which is a 2 bhp bump compared to the standard engine. Even the gearing has been altered as the cafe racer sports two less teeth on the rear sprocket for a better top end and the engine is more revv happy as it produces 1,000 rpm extra. Triumph claims a 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 6.7 seconds which is a second quicker than the Speed 400’s timing. So as you can see Triumph hasn’t just done a visual makeover but given the Thruxton 400 a unique and sportier persona.
Being a cafe racer, the bike sports clip-on handlebar and rearset footpegs for a sporty riding stance. Other changes include a tighter rake angle to reduce the wheelbase and a redesigned subframe. The new bike is 4 kg heavier than the Speed 400 owing to the new fairing and features 10 mm more travel at both ends. The chassis setup has been done to offer sporty handling dynamics, but how’s it to ride we shall in our first ride report which will go live on our website next week. On the features front, the Triumph Thruxton 400 sports the same semi-digital instrument cluster as seen on its brethren and also gets a traction control system. Service interval is pretty high at 16,000 km and the claimed fuel efficiency of the bike is 27.5 kmpl, which is 1 kmpl less than the Triumph Speed 400.
