Uber Offers Luxury Motorhome Trips for a Limited Time, Now Serves 3,000+ Intercity Routes

Uber’s Intercity service now connects over 3,000 routes between cities and towns, and the company is publicising this expansion by offering rides in custom-designed luxury motorhomes to its Delhi-NCR users for a limited period. 

The company credits the growth of India’s road transport infrastructure in recent years, saying the continuing development of highways and expressways has allowed it to reach more destinations than ever before, including smaller towns. While it has not disclosed exact statistics, the company has also said that long-distance travel is an area of interest, and intercity travel has posted significant year-on-year growth.

The luxury motorhomes have been custom designed for Uber, and can be booked for journeys beginning within the Delhi-NCR area between August 7 and September 6. Bookings will be accepted beginning from August 4. The Uber app will show a new icon for this booking category during the promotion period. It is not yet clear how many such vehicles will be deployed and which destinations they can be taken to.

Uber says that each of its motorhomes can seat up to five people comfortably, describing them as “private lounges on wheels”. Those who manage to book one will have a driver and a helper at their service. Photos released by the company show plush interiors, large bench seats, window shades, soft lighting, and Uber branding on some soft furnishings. Each vehicle will be equipped with a mini fridge, a microwave, a TV, and a toilet.

Booking an Intercity Motorhome will give riders all the same conveniences as standard Uber  trips. Bookings can be made in advance and stops can be added mid-journey. Cars and routes are tracked in real-time, and live support is available through the app.

Uber, which began operations in India in 2013, has also released some statistics about Intercity ride bookings. The top five routes in the last 12 months were Mumbai-Pune, Delhi-Agra, Bengaluru-Mysuru, Lucknow-Kanpur, and Ahmedabad-Vadodara. Bookings were predictably more concentrated around long weekends and holidays. Fridays were the most popular days for setting out on an Intercity trip, with most journeys beginning either in the early morning or mid-afternoon when traffic is usually lighter. Uber also says it registered the most interest in Intercity bookings around the Diwali, Holi, and Eid holidays, and also over the summer.
