Uber has introduced an in-app video recording feature for drivers in ten Indian cities, aiming to deter rider misconduct and provide secure video evidence in disputes.

Uber has quietly rolled out a new in-app video recording feature for its drivers in India, aiming to strengthen safety and accountability during rides. This feature, currently in its pilot phase, is designed to act as a deterrent against rider misconduct and provide drivers with an added layer of protection.

The move comes in response to several reported incidents where drivers have faced aggressive behaviour or threats of false complaints from passengers. Some drivers have shared experiences where late-night riders, particularly female passengers, insist on taking routes of their choice rather than those suggested by the app. In cases where drivers refuse, they are sometimes threatened with fabricated complaints, putting their livelihoods at risk.

With the introduction of the video recording tool, Uber seeks to address these concerns by allowing drivers to capture video evidence during trips. The company has emphasised that all recordings are double-encrypted and stored securely on the driver’s device.

Importantly, neither Uber nor any third party can access these recordings unless the driver voluntarily submits them as part of a safety report. This ensures that privacy is maintained while also empowering drivers to protect themselves in case of disputes.

The pilot feature is currently available in ten major Indian cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Lucknow. Uber’s decision to launch the feature in these cities reflects the high volume of rides and the need for better safety measures in urban areas.
