Here is the list of two-wheelers heading our way in September.
The month of freedom was an exciting one for Indian bikers as we witnessed a slew of new product launches. And this juggernaut has no intention of slowing down as the festive season is fast approaching and manufacturers are making sure that they cash in on a bumper sale in the next few months. So here’s what to expect!
1. TVS NTorq 150
Rivals - Hero Xoom 160, Aprilia SR 175 & Yamaha Aerox 155
Expected price - ₹1.35-1.45 lakh (ex-showroom)
Yes, we have been waiting for so long for a bigger TVS and it’s finally happening. For the lakhs of TVS NTorq 125 owners an upgrade is on your way in the form of the NTorq 150. TVS has released a teaser in which we could see a quad LED projector headlight and hear a raspy exhaust note. The new NTorq 150 is expected to share its sharp and sporty styling DNA with existing scooter, but will have larger proportions and the closest scooter we can think of with respect to styling is the Yamaha Aerox 155 but without the underbone.
The exhaust note is similar to the NTorq 125 and we think it might be a bored out version of the same engine. Hopefully this new motor will come with liquid-cooling and we expect it to churn out around 13-15 bhp and around 13 Nm of torque. So with respect to performance, the new scooter better deliver the fun quotient and it might also be the first TVS ICE scooter to feature 14-inch wheels which will help improve its handling dynamics.
On the features front expect a large TFT instrument console and a bunch of connected features, ride modes, navigation, and even some segment first features like cruise control. The NTorq 150 is expected to go on sale in the first week of September.
2. Hero Xoom 160
Rivals - TVS NTorq 150, Aprilia SR 175 & Yamaha Aerox 155
Price - ₹1.49 lakh (ex-showroom)
Delivery timeline - Mid-September
Moving on we will get another big displacement scooter in the form of the new Hero Xoom 160. Now you guys would jump in the comments and point out that the scooter is already launched and the price too has been revealed. And you’re absolutely correct as even bookings had commenced but deliveries haven't started yet and we have confirmation that deliveries for the Hero maxi scooter will commence in September finally and we will be riding the new scooter in the first week of September. So if you’re planning to buy one or are interested in the same, please make sure you hit the subscribe button so you get notified when the review drops. And I shall drop the walkaround video link in the description.
3. KTM RC 160
Rivals - Yamaha R15 V4, Hero Karizma XMR
Expected Price - ₹1.90-1.95 lakh (ex-showroom)
Now time for KTM! And the brand has two launches lined-up for us, first up is the KTM RC 160, the full-faired sibling of the 160 Duke which we test rode last month so don’t forget to check out that review. Apart from styling, which is based on the current generation KTM RC 200 and the sporty riding ergonomics via the clip-on handle bar and rear-set footpegs, the new RC160 is identical to the 160 Duke. While the fairing would add weight, it will help with aerodynamics and expect the RC 160 to have a better top speed. It will directly lock horns with the Yamaha R15 which has had a free run in the segment.
4. KTM 390 SMC R
Rivals - None
Expected Price - ₹3.30-3.45 lakh (ex-showroom)
The next salvo from KTM will be its first mass market super moto offering for the Indian market - 390 SMC R. Basically think of it as a KTM 390 Enduro with road tyres and long travel suspension and I am sure, it will be the most hooligan bike of the lot even ahead of the 390 Duke. Despite producing the same power as the 390 Duke, the SMC is 11 kg lighter, so you can imagine the difference in power-to-weight ratio. Seat height is on the taller side at 860 mm, but given the sag in suspension, it shouldn’t be too bothersome as we have seen on the Enduro R. The SMC is a brave move by KTM given the fact how niche this segment is and honestly I can’t wait to ride it!
5. Triumph Street Scrambler 400
Rivals - Honda CB350 RS
Expected Price - ₹2.60 lakh (ex-showroom)
After launching the Thruxton 400 last month, the British bikemaker is gearing up to launch a new brat tracker. Yes, Triumph wants to kickstart a new segment in the retro roadster space and a brat tracker is a rugged roadster but something that’s not as off-road focused as a scrambler. The new motorcycle could be called the Street Scrambler 400 and will be the latest addition in the ever expanding Triumph 400 cc platform. The engine tune, frame, suspension and braking hardware will be similar to the Triumph Speed 400. And it will be positioned in between the Speed and the Scrambler 400. Visually too this new bike could be larger in proportion in comparison to the Speed 400, which has faced a lot of criticism for being too petite.
The test mule looked quite rugged than the standard Speed 400, but was not as off-road focused as the Scrambler 400 X. Even the fuel tank shape and size, and the handlebar seemed to be carried over from the Scrambler 400 X. These details made us believe that Triumph would call the bike the Street Scrambler 400.
8. Suzuki e-Access
Rivals - TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Ola S1 & Honda Activa e
Expected Price - ₹1.20-1.40 lakh (ex-showroom)
We have already ridden the Suzuki e-Access and came back impressed. But what isn’t impressive is that the electric scooter still hasn’t gone on sale, which is quite disappointing. However, with the festive season approaching, we feel that Suzuki might finally launch its first electric scooter for the Indian market. As for the scooter’s details, I shall add the Access review link in the description.
9. Ultraviolette New Bike
Even Ultraviolette is gearing up for a new product launch, as we have received a block your invite for late September. However, there are no further details, so it might be an update to the existing F77, or we might even test ride the pre-production version of the Tesseract scooter or the Shockwave dirt bike. I really hope it’s the latter, as these two products have created a lot of buzz and interest among Indian bikers. On a personal front, I am very keen to ride an Indian-made electric dirtbike as it has huge potential.
